Starting November 2020 Nikola Institute is expanding their pro bono program to include free Advisory reports for micro-entities.
An Advisory report is the Institute’s recommended first step in developing any innovation, such as a new consumer product invention. The report covers essential topics such as marketability, financial feasibility, and distribution strategies.
The report is followed by an optional consultation with a development expert to review the report, answer questions, and discuss possible next steps. Consultation is planned to be also covered by the pro bono program for micro-entities.
The Nikola Institute follows simplified USPTO-defined categories for entity status. The main requirements for micro-entity status are:
- In the preceding the calendar year, did not had a gross income, as defined in section 61(a) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (26 U.S.C. 61(a)), exceeding $189,537 USD,
- Has not been named as the inventor or a joint inventor on more than four previously filed patent applications in any country.
The expanded pro bono services will initially be offered on a limited basis, with expansion to all applicants planned in the first quarter of 2021.
